The app

MacbookCheckr's diagnostics run entirely offline: gathering the information and running the twenty checks both happen on your Mac. The app has no account, no advertising profile, and sells nothing to anyone.

The Pro key. If you request one from inside the app, your email address is sent so the key can reach you, and nothing else. Verifying the key is computed locally, with no network call.

Updates. Once a day, the app checks whether a newer version exists. That request carries only the installed version number, no machine identifier. What is downloaded is checked against a cryptographic signature before being installed.

QR code sharing. When it is on — it is by default — the report is published on macbookcheckr.com at the end of each scan, so it can be read from a phone. It carries the model, the configuration, the state of the components and, unless you clear the checkbox, the serial number. Anyone holding the link can read it; the page is not indexed by search engines. The card menu, on the overview, turns this publishing off or removes a report already online, at any time.

Usage measurement. On each launch the app reports that it opened; on the launch after a crash, it sends a summary of it. These carry the app version, the macOS version, the Mac model, the language, and for a crash its cause and the first lines of the stack. They are tied to an identifier drawn at random on first launch, linked neither to you, nor to your serial number, nor to any shared report.

This website

This site uses Google Analytics to measure traffic: page views, referrer and device type. The tool sets cookies and sends that data to Google Ireland Limited, where IP addresses are anonymised.

No advertising is served and no data is sold. You can opt out of measurement by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by enabling “Do Not Track” in your browser.

Downloading the app also triggers an internal notification, which carries no personal data — only your browser's language. The same goes for the tools in our articles (serial number decoder, battery calculator): the notification carries the result — build date and factory, or cycles and verdict — never the full serial number.

The forms

If you request a Pro key, your email address is used to send you the key and is kept in our list of requests. If you use the contact form, your address and your message reach us by email so that we can reply; the message is not stored on the server.

Both forms trigger an internal notification in Slack, which receives your email address and, for the contact form, the content of your message. Slack acts here as a processor. No data is sold or passed on to anyone else.

You can request deletion of your data at any time by writing to us.
